Real-Time Storytime is coming back!

So after a break, the show will be resuming and will be streamlined with new technology to speed things up.  Traditionally, the show would start and then we'd allow viewers to add a keyword or a phrase.  Then as they chatted it into the show, I would transcribe into a book and then have it for reference.  It could take anywhere from 5-10 minutes.  Sometimes a little longer.  Now there's a new way to handle the keyword/phrase submissions.

Introducing StreamTalking.com

By using this system, it will speed things up immediately!!!  So, if you haven't, please create an account and then check it out.

You can see the old episodes at http://www.realtimestorytime.com and the live show is at YouTube.com/RobertRRicks

See ya on the show!

The first Holofoil card of the Robert R Ricks Tarot Set

The limited edition 100 card autographed tarot card is done...

This holofoil tarot card is one of the 78 cards that will eventually make up the complete set that will be created from each book that I write.  For Magic Really Sucks there will be one card for 2018 featuring Ethan.

Then in early 2019 there will be a tarot card featuring Valk.

Then the next card will feature Melissa which should be out in the middle of 2019.  The final card at the end of 2019 will feature Sparkles and the Fae King.  Then after that each book that comes out will have a corresponding holofoil numbered trump card.

The Magic Really Sucks has a second trilogy to follow the first one.  It will then have three one-off stories that stand on their own.

The Sordid Adventures of Farook Fantook and Jizzy Jay, Angelic Revelations, 2013 Aftermath, 2014 the Truth, The Poet, Harbinger, Tatted Souls, Choices, Infernal Justice, The Greatest Depression, Terrible Twos, Augmented Truth, Fractured, Eternal Love, Alone in the Crowd, The End of Eternity, Diary of a Conspiracy Nut and My Inner Demons are being worked on and are in various stages of development.

Those stories alone will comprise the next 25 holofoil cards.  Brining the foreseeable total to 30.  That will leave an additional 48 to be created and issued.

The goal is to push out 78 total cards to create a possible 100 sets.  With each trump offering there will be five (5) cards pulled from the sets.  #12, #16, #23, #28, and #29 which I will keep for myself and my family.  When they are completed I will then give each member of my family their complete set which they can do whatever they want with them.

I will NEVER run the same design for the master Holofoil set and there will be accounting to make sure I know who has ordered which cards and their original owners.  The people who set their mind to it and collect these cards from the beginning run a good chance of getting a complete set.  With only 95 potential cards in the wild this could make for an interesting adventure for some.

The limited edition holofoil cards will initially be extended to R3 INSIDER MEMBERS who will have access to buy before the general public.  How do you become an R3 INSIDER MEMBER?  It's very easy.  You just need to sign-up for the newsletter by either:

This is one of the reasons I fear for America...

So many of you know I am at the tail end of a move and as such I was rewarding myself with a new machine to which I was going to write many many more epic novel.  I scanned the spectrum of the custom build machines from Cyber Power PC to Digital Storm.  And then came across Ironside.  Specifically their Mako limited edition build and was like, "Yes!  This is machine I was looking for!"

I could have bought it right then and there and put it on a card but we just dropped a MINT on this new house and have had nightmare situations the whole length of the build and decided to go through the financing option that Ironside uses [GetFinancing (https://www.getfinancing.com/)] and figured, sure why not.

So I built up my spec and like an excited kid went and placed the order which approved me for $5k which was much more than the rig went for $2,800.  So I figured we were off to the races.  I just had to make the first payment and we were done right?  Nope... I was wrong.

A couple of days passed and I grabbed a few peripherals, a new monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers in anticipation of the new computer coming...

My son comes to my office and I show him the pictures of the Ironside machine and he's like "Cool.  When will it show up?"

I shrugged and brought up the Ironside website to check the build status and it showed "Pending Payment".  I was confused.  I had made my first payment and couldn't understand it.

I called into GetFinancing and they said it was probably that the actual lender (KRW Associates) who needed to fund the loan and maybe they needed license or utility bill, etc...  She gave me their phone number and I called in.  Sure enough they needed some additional information and said they had sent me an email asking for it.  I was a little confused since I didn't see the email in my system and in SPAM.

I explained I was in a new home and didn't have any utility bills yet but had a Comcast PDF with my address on it and showed I had setup internet in my new home.  The girl put me on brief hold and came back and said it was fine.  I sent in the ID pic as well as the PDF and figured we were off to the races...

Nope.  The day I received and email from Robin and she pointed out the PDF I sent didn't have my name on it.  I reviewed it and she was right it had the business name but not mine! DOI!!!!  So I went to the account page and found my account with my name and screen shot the image and sent it.

I didn't hear anything so I called into the company and figured we could talk and I could do a video showing the house, the address basically anything they needed to show I was a legit customer who wasn't trying to scam or bamboozle anyone.  I got her voicemail and I left a message.

I sent in an email this morning as I got up hoping it was all resolved.

I get this response back.

Robert,
We rejected your funding yesterday.  We cannot verify that you live at your address.
 Thank you,Robin

And that was that.  With no follow up, no effort to work with me... nothing they just decided to close it all down.

We've done a few back and forth emails since then and I was relieved to hear that the credit inquiry was a soft one, so it shouldn't impact my credit score.  Also, they will refund my initial payment.  But while that's all good and dandy, I still don't have my Ironside Mako PC which I was so excited about initially.  I am disappointed and frustrated.  I guess I'll go to Microsoft and grab a different machine other than another Surface Studio since they don't seem to have any problems taking my money.

The main issue I have here is the sheer lackadaisical nature of the exchange.  I was the one constantly reaching out to them. Trying to work with them.  Since they were going to be the one making the money on the deal, shouldn't it have been the other way around?  And there my friends is where my fear for America comes in.  This isn't just one company... This is a cancer that exists in all verticals not just IT financing... Customer service?  For the most part it's dead.  That makes me sad.

But there's some light at the end of the tunnel... This could have been a saving grace since I was doing research for this I found out there's a LOT of angry people who don't like KRW.  So much so, there's a website pissedconsumer.com with some people VERY upset with them.

https://krw-associates.pissedconsumer.com/review.html

So maybe God was saving me from a REALLY BAD SITUATION... So if you're planning on buying a rig and you get KRW, just know they left a bad taste in my mouth and are NOT Angry Jackalope Approved.

Magic Really Sucks - First Attempt Animated Cover

First attempt at animating a cover.  Now that I know what the tools are, I can focus on layouts which can use the brushes and animations to their advantages.  This is a cool little program.

Changes... Sometimes requires a catalyst...

Change is in the air... I needed to do something, (for me sometimes I have to do dramatic things to spark my mind).  So I did something that forced me out of my 'comfort zone'.

Anyways, check the video below to see...

The types of rejection letters I don't mind... well it is still rejection...

So as a writer trying to find my dream agent I get rejected... A lot, and that's fine.  It's part of the whole process and I get that.  I don't mind the standard form letter rejections like this one.

Dear Robert,
On behalf of the agents here at [Agency Name], thank you for giving us the opportunity to consider your work. I apologize for the form letter, but the volume of query letters we receive means we cannot send every writer a personal response. Please know that we do give each and every query serious attention.
Unfortunately, we do not feel strongly enough about your project to pursue it further. Agenting is very subjective, however, and even though we could not take on your project, another agent might feel differently.

Please accept our best wishes for success in your writing career.
Sincerely,

And then there's the rejections like this:

Dear Rob,

I have now read your query. I can see the work put into the query and that you have effectively captured the nature of the novel, but I confess that it is not for me. I didn’t love it, and, unfortunately, if I don’t feel that strongly, I’m the wrong agent for the work. Publishing is a notoriously subjective business, and every new author needs both an agent and an editor who do love their work.  It's hellishly difficult getting editors to take a look at new authors, so that initial enthusiasm is vital.
FYI, I've taken on five writers as clients and turned down well over 4,000, so far... I know it can be as difficult to get an agent as it is to be taken on by a publisher.  You just have to keep plugging away. Good luck.
All best wishes for the future.
Yours,
[Agent Name]
There's a huge difference in the way you feel.  I know Agents are bogged down and in understanding that, when you get one like the above example it takes the sting out and helps give an author a better lay of the land.

Frustrating things I hear from Agents...

Frustrating things I hear from Lit Agents...

So part of trying to find a Literary Agent is submitting a Query letter.  What is a query letter you ask?  Well here is the definition:
A query letter is a formal letter sent to magazine editors, literary agents and sometimes publishing houses or companies. Writers write query letters to propose writing ideas.
Now understand these folks get a shit-ton of query letters so you want to get to the point be reflective of your work and explain things as plainly as you can.

So I sent in this one to an agent who I though would be a good fit.

[Begin Query Letter]
A book blending Nephilim, Angels, Demons, Demi-Gods, Gods, and Goddesses in a world almost identical to our own.  Magic is real and for our main character, Ethan Higashi Magic Really Sucks!!!

Hello, my name is Robert Ricks and I have completed my first Trilogy of my series Magic Really Sucks and I am looking for an agent.

I set out with a few objectives when writing Magic Really Sucks.

#1) I wanted to try to find a new format to get readers to flow through the books and feel like it was a movie since one of the challenges I learned from on my first novel Convergence 2012 is, there are a LOT of folks who struggle with reading.  My solution, use more narrative.  My feedback thus far has exceeded my wildest expectations and am happy with the resulting style of writing on Magic Really Sucks.

#2) I wanted to create a magical explanation for a lot of conspiracy, and oddities throughout history.  For example Antarctica with Nazi and “aliens”, flat Earth, technology, and Illuminati. I wanted the story to take place in a world that is ‘almost’ identical to ours.  There are some differences and as the story progresses and the reader pays attention they will spot those and see why they are there.  Pulling from the book of Enoch and creating one of the last Nephilim allowed me to blend in elements of Heaven and Hell.

#3) Characters that are driven by their desires and relationships.  I wanted characters wide enough that one or more should appeal to the reader.

#4) Finally, I challenged myself to write and keep it YA.  I have a tendency to go wild with language and usually speak in ways that make sailors blush.  I am proud of the way I kept the language to a minimum without it feeling fake.

The trilogy specs break down as follows:

The trilogy is:
Magic Really Sucks “Revelation” [94,668 words]
Magic Really Sucks “Liberation” [92,235 words]
Magic Really Sucks “Redemption” [103,512 words]

A brief summary of the novel(s): Magic Really Sucks is the story of a man who manifests power and as he learns more of who and what he is, he encounters other who become much more than friends.  Stories about love, friendship, betrayal, and growth.

Description (Book 1):
Ethan Higashi, a software developer at a B-level gaming studio is about to turn 45.  He is unaware that he's a powerful Nephilim who is about to discover a world of magic that he didn't know existed.  Thrust into a wild world full of intrigue and sinister machinations, Ethan quickly learns as a Nephilim there is no limit to the power that he can wield and there are powerful forces that want to leverage that potential to reshape the world to their vision.  From the lowest regions of Hell to the highest reaches of Heaven there are many who wish to convert the young Nephilim to their purpose.  Ethan has to learn quickly who and what to trust as his world is turned upside down and undertakes the journey that will define him as Earth's greatest hero or its greatest villain… With unlimited power comes many temptations.  Will it corrupt him to the core?

[End Query Letter]

The response I got:

[BEGIN RESPONSE]

Dear Robert,

Thank you for submitting Magic Really Sucks to [AGENCY NAME] for our consideration. Unfortunately, we are going to pass on this project.

We think the story in the query sounds interesting. However, we found that the narrative did more telling than showing through an abundance of dialogue, which took away from the overall plot. Some of the dialogue also read a bit too stiff for us. We also felt that the voice of the story was too young for the characters. In your query you mention that you tried to keep the language YA, which would work great for a YA story, but with a 45 year old character the text needs to be aged up to the adult level. Keeping the swearing to a minimum is fine, but making sure the text reflects the ages of the characters is important.

Thank you again for your submission and we wish you the best of luck in finding representation in the future.
[END RESPONSE]

So here's my friggin' problem!

Narrative is part of my experimentation which I point out #1 on my Query Letter...

The voice of the character is too young for his age?  Says who?  For the demographic and profession he's in, he talks like ME, because he's patterned off of me and my peers who are all friggin' nerds and talk like I do!!!!! WTF?!!!  What fuckin' world do these people live in where someone's speech pattern dictates age?  Come the fuck on!  Seriously?!

Additionally, I submitted ten pages... HOW THE HELL CAN YOU EVEN DISCERN THE PLOT AND IF THE DIALOG TAKES AWAY FROM IT?  Umm people tell stories EVERY day and it's usually through a form of communication called vocal narrative!!!  We TELL STORIES!

Oh well.  In this case I think I would've preferred the obligatory form letter as this one really kicked me in the gut and filled me with fear.  Considering the fact that this Agent could've been the one to represent me to the majors.  Holy shit!!!!  I dodged a damn bullet there.

:)

Artwork Concepts for Magic Really Sucks

One of the cool things I do as a designer is bring people's vision to reality.  This offers me a cool advantage as I'm working through my books.

Take the logo as an example... I knew I wanted the title treatment to stand out and be interesting.  I also knew it had to have a Magical 'feel' to it and so I created the Glyph by laying each line on top of each other and then running effects on it inside of Photoshop.  The logo came out as I had envisioned and I am very pleased with it.

Ethan's design wasn't exactly what I wanted, but as I worked through it realized it worked.  Part of what he goes through changes him profoundly and as a result his appearance is younger than his age would normally dictate.

Valk's was more specific and she was pretty solid in my head.  So when I rendered her and then had to put all the tattoos on her it was pretty damn close to what I envision her as.  Maybe not so large in the chest area but everything else is what I had in mind.

Melissa was a photo I found and was like it capture her 'essence' but not really what I imagine her face as...

This is 'close' but not quite right.  He's a bit too skinny in this design but the feel is good and I thought it was a good first stab at him.

A little too much make up but the hair and face structure is what I envision for her.  The eyes need to be wilder.  But again, for teaser stuff this captures some of what makes Fiona Fiona...

Kat was one of those characters where it didn't really mater too much until we got to the second book and then I was like hmmm.  What does she look like.  I had fun with the renders on her.  Trying to find an intense yet wounded, innocent look...

Randy had many forms and faces... but this is the Legion form... The host for it anyways.  I think out of all of them this pic really came close to what he looks like in Magic Really Sucks later on.

This more captures the 'essence' but not the real look of Mordecai.  He's taller.  More gaunt.  Covered in crazy tattoos... But the electrical aspect of this pic is what I was after.

My daughter drew this for me as I explained Sparkles and I loved it.  Thought it was pretty awesome so I'm sharing.  The problem with Sparkles is that damn iridescent fur of hers.  Really pretty to see when the light hits her and she's moving.  Hard as HELL to try to get as an image...

Magic Really Sucks - Origins

Magic Really Sucks... The Origin.

Magic Really Sucks… Started out from a VERY WEIRD and vivid dream about an environment (very much like our own Earth) which had magic.  I saw some students who were discussing magic and bloodlines.  The strength of the blood defined the type of magic the caster was good at.  For example, if you were Japanese you were stronger at Martial Magic and Healing spells.  Martial Magic was basically a type of magic which augmented physical strikes and defenses.  I saw these students discussing religion and how motions during prayers are like physical glyphs which block a person’s innate ability to harness magic.

As the dreams unfolded I learned a lot about the magic world which was like our own with subtle differences.

I told a close friend about the dreams and he was like “Write the story already!”

I discussed it with my wife and she added a twist for me.  She agreed I should write it but challenged me to make it PG13.  Really watch the language and see if I could do it.  I’m a pretty foul-mouthed individual and writing something without my normal spices to kick it up a notch was a challenging thought.  I nodded.  What the hell right?

So I sat down and started writing.  There was no place where I had any doubts, any reservations about pacing or direction.  I went where the story wanted to go and prayed the entire time it would pass the continuity test at the end.

I had a few close friends and family who were interested in ready the story as it progressed in real-time.

One issue I wanted to address from the outset was the way the story was crafted.  I realized with Convergence 2012 that I was losing readers around Chapter 5.  Chapter 6 and 7 was where the story really started going and I told myself I needed to find a way to grab readers and keep holding on.  So I went more dialog heavy.  I kept my exterior descriptions vague and short so as not to lose the readers.  The vast majority of my feedback has been VERY positive in this regards.  I set out to make the story read like it was a movie.  And from the feedback, I succeeded.  Of course, the flip side to that is the reader who really REALLY loved the writing style of Steve King with deep rich descriptions commented about the heavy use of dialog to push the story and said he didn’t care for the style.

I fell in love with the characters and really enjoyed writing Magic Really Sucks.

I designed the story also to allow for a second Trilogy which takes place in the Mystical Monastery that Ethan, Kat, and Mordecai spent 10 years…

There will also be three one-shot stories.  One for Sparkles and Pinoke.  One for Valk.  And one for Ethan, Valk and Melissa.

Here’s the Intro Piece for Book 1, “Revelations”

“Ethan Higashi, a software developer at a B-level gaming studio is about to turn 45.  He is unaware that he’s a powerful Nephilim who is about to discover a world of magic that he didn’t know existed. Ethan has to learn quickly who and what to trust as his world is turned upside down and undertakes the journey that will define him as Earth’s greatest hero or its greatest villain… With unlimited power comes many temptations.  Will it corrupt him to the core?”

Here’s the base teaser for Book 2, "Liberation"

“Ethan finds himself trapped in a magical prison which was designed to be impossible to escape from.  His friends Valk, Melissa and Sparkles recruit help and leverage all the resources of Heaven and Hell to try and free him.

Meanwhile, powerful forces come to play and a new Nephilim has her sights set high and has possession of the powerful Trumps cards that Ethan and his team worked hard to remove from the world of man.”
The second book of the Trilogy… Ahh the joy.  This book progressed pretty easily and I was like, “Oh man.  Ethan’s in prison… And other things happened and I was like where the hell is this story gonna go?…”

The Final Book for Magic Really Sucks:

The teaser text for Book 3, "Redemption"

Ethan’s freedom from Gabriel’s prison comes at a surprising cost and with his new role as King of Hell, Ethan is tasked with repairing the damage to the Earth and fighting back the Darkness which threatens everything and everyone from Heaven to Hell.  He rallies his friends as they confront a vast and seemingly indestructible enemy.  Mistakes of the past have taken a heavy toll and what will be the ultimate price for Redemption?  The final book of the Magic Really Sucks Trilogy will reveal what that cost is.
Things started to get stressful on this one.  Lots of moving pieces.  Lots of strands to tie together.  I think overall all the pieces were addressed and a few were left out which will be resolved in the second trilogy.  So you’ll see what I mean when we roll into the next trilogy.

This had some really epic moments and introduction to some really cool concepts.  I hate being vague but at the same time need to make sure I don’t let the cat out of the bag.

There are some deeper meaning and things I do in these stories on purpose and one point I think is imperative for folks to understand is this: This is an alternate version of our Earth.  Some things are going to be very different than ours even if you remove the concept of people being able to use magic.
