StreamTalking.com is a great solution for Live Streamers!

STREAMTALKING.COM - brings sanity to the chaos of Live Stream

One of the problems with doing Live shows is audience participation.  It's not hard to engage them and have conversations, but more a problem with the technology and also audience content cultivation.

The major problem is LAG... There's latency with live streams and to make it easy to follow, if I ask a question, "What's your favorite color?" It will take a few seconds to get to the viewer and then a few more for them to respond.  In some cases this LAG will be around 21 seconds.  This makes it difficult for a lot of new streamers to work with.

Then add in the problem of streaming to different platforms at the same time.  Some streamers are lucky to have a staff of some sort to moderate and hand pick answers.

Add in the chaotic nature of live chat.  Asking a question where you are trying to do any real data-mining is reduced to a majority answer of "Yes or No"...

That's where StreamTalking.com comes in.  It allows Streamers to ask questions BEFORE the stream and then they can present the results in the live stream.

How do I use it?

With the Real-Time Storytime show, there was a huge time sink in the beginning of the show where users would chat their keyword or phrase and then I had to write it down and have it in a book.  The users couldn't see the list in front of them to remind them.  When I used the keyword or phrase, I would toggle "Keyword Used" on the screen but they had to remember the words.

You can see samples of the recent show submission here: https://streamtalking.com/RobertRRicks/the-real-time-storytime-show/NtwxFN0Y-16018713

You can see it in the video of the show embedded into it:

By using StreamTalking.com the users login and submit them, and then when the show begins I can choose which ones to display on the screen and it stays there for the show.  Users can see it, and it also shows the world who has been providing these amazing keywords/phrases.

It has saved me about 10 minutes from what I used to do and that's an extra 10 minutes of actual content for the viewers.

I've also used it on the Angry Jackalope show where I ask questions like "What are some things you'd like to know about me?" and then I would activate only a single User Question at a time and it would show up on my Live stream.

On the Angry Jackalope show I also used it to test and ask questions like "Who do you think will be the next president?" and "How many people do you know who got Covid19?" both of those questions were good tests to see charts.

As a Viewer it is really easy to setup an account... Here's the explanation for Viewers:

You can be part of the shows by signing up as a Viewer at:

https://streamtalking.com

If you're a Streamer, this could be a useful tool to help mitigate the chaos of viewer engagement!

It's been useful for me.

Novellas are the future... This is why I write them!

There are a lot of reasons that I am a fan of and have dedicated a lot of time writing Novellas, and in this blog post, I'm going to explain my thought process on Novellas and their potential use to change the amount people read.

According to PEW RESEARCH, 24% of people polled don't read books at all.  75% stated they did read, and 1% didn't answer.  These are promising numbers and show that a healthy amount of people do read, but...

"Overall, Americans read an average (mean) of 12 books per year, while the typical (median) American has read four books in the past 12 months. Each of these figures is largely unchanged since 2011, when the Center first began conducting the surveys of Americans’ book reading habits."

That's not a lot of books being read.  Compare that to TV/Internet viewing trends:

"The average adult (18+) spends nearly 6 hours a day on video consumption. "
(source Q1 2018 Nielson Total Audience Report)

To put that in a different way, 2,190 hours a year spent watching some form of video.  The average book of 300 pages would be 10 hours a book, times the four book average would equate to 40 hours a year.

So why such a large difference in the mediums?

The traditional excuses are:
- Not enough time
- Not enough money
- Not sure of investment of time on a new book
- Too tired
- Too hard

Not enough time.  This is one that I deal with on my own, as a full time father, husband, consultant, entrepreneur, author and YouTuber.  I work 18-hours days 7 days a week, and yet I still manage to find time to read.  Granted, I enjoy it, I need to do it to research and continue to learn.  But as with everything else, it comes down to time management.  But I do understand one key point with the time crunch.  The inability to sit and read and finish in a single reading is a huge issue I believe because of the "instant gratification' mindset which many have become accustomed to.  So as I started writing Novellas and getting them in the hands of people the #1 comment has been, "I love I can read this in under two hours."

Not enough money.  The average full sized novels can range from around $14-20.  This can test some people's discretionary dollars.  The solution with the Novellas is that a 6"x9" is priced at $7 and the Pocket Edition versions $4.25.  Even though this is a HIGHER cost per word count, it is a less expensive proposition at the time of purchase which seems to sit better with the readers who have purchased the Novellas.

Not sure if the book is going to be good.  Investment on time on a new book.  The other benefit of a Novella's shorter read time, is the speed that someone can examine and browse to see if it's a potential 'fit'.  The feedback I've received so far with the Novella experiments has been positive.  There seems to be less fear with the size and form-factor of the Novella vs a full-sized novel.

Too Tired.  This one is tough.  If you're just looking to veg out in front of the TV and that's how you mentally decompress, there's no magical formula on books which will address this.

Too hard.  This is something I HEAR A LOT!  It hurts my head... I can't read... It's too difficult... Which is becoming something I am hearing more and more as I talk with young people.  So I even came up with a solution here.  What I discovered was, it wasn't necessarily that the reading was too hard, rather it was the descriptive paragraphs defining the sights and smells and thoughts of a character were too dense and not as interesting to the reader as DIALOG was.  I watched my kids and had them trace with their fingers where they were reading and I watched them jump past the descriptive text and went to dialog.

"So tell me something..."
"Yeah?"
"Why did you skip the paragraph above the dialog here?"
"Because I like it when characters are talking to each other..."
"Ahhhh I see."
"Do you?"
"Yes, indeed."

This was interesting for me and I tested it in 2017 when I wrote my trilogy Magic Really Sucks.  All the folks who read it noted it was more dialog heavy and roughly 85% of the readers preferred it.  Which was amazing for me to discover.    So with my Novellas, I have continued that formula and the reduced page count (Usually around 60-65 pages at the 6"x9" form-factor) combined makes for an 'easier' read.

So far, I have created four Novellas, "Three Simple Rules", "The Rusted Blade", "Infernal Justice" and "Hairy Situation - Origins."  I am publishing them through Lulu.com and am enjoying the experiences I am having with the readers.

I invite you to try similar projects.  This is with the goal of getting people reading and enjoying it.  There was a time when I was growing up and the perception of an author was one of prestige and respect.  Now the respect for the printed word is not the same.

I created NovEps.com with the goal of getting Novellas out and want to elevate reading to a new level.  I'm tagging all my Novellas posts in Instagram, Twitter, etc. with #MakeReadingGreatAgain and #MRGA

Here's some of the art I'm using to promote the Novellas so far,

I have also borrowed the old comic book layouts for these projects since I discovered the form-factors of these are roughly the same size as old-school graphic novels.  And if you look at the average price of comics today and factor in many of the storylines span 5 or 6 issues, I wanted to present the readers an option for a full self contained story at a fraction of the price and still give them some of the nostalgia of what comics used to be.  (That's a whole different post!)

You can learn more about these Novellas at:

And the Real-Time Storytime Show (Hairy Situation is a Novella based off the Live YouTube show I do every Sunday.)

NovEps.com is LIVE!

NovEps.com is LIVE!

What the hell is NovEps?
Well to put it simply, it's a repository of Novellas from Robert R Ricks (and soon some others) that are designed to be printed in smaller slimmer formats.  These formats have some advantages over full-sized novels.

#1) Smaller and shorter stories make it more portable
#2) Smaller size also reduces unit cost
#3) Smaller size also reduces intimidation and the dreaded "Ain't got no time ta read..."
#4) Reduced cost lowers resistance to try new authors

So head on over to NovEps.com and see the first two Novellas that are available...

Initial Real-time / Storytime Experiment...

OK, this was the first experiment I did with trying to tell a real-time story based off of keywords given to me by my viewers... I enjoyed it so much that it became a regular series on my Robert R Ricks channel...

I do these now at least once a week (USUALLY ALWAYS on Sunday) but trying to squeeze a few more in during the week.

The first Holofoil card of the Robert R Ricks Tarot Set

The limited edition 100 card autographed tarot card is done...

This holofoil tarot card is one of the 78 cards that will eventually make up the complete set that will be created from each book that I write.  For Magic Really Sucks there will be one card for 2018 featuring Ethan.

Then in early 2019 there will be a tarot card featuring Valk.

Then the next card will feature Melissa which should be out in the middle of 2019.  The final card at the end of 2019 will feature Sparkles and the Fae King.  Then after that each book that comes out will have a corresponding holofoil numbered trump card.

The Magic Really Sucks has a second trilogy to follow the first one.  It will then have three one-off stories that stand on their own.

The Sordid Adventures of Farook Fantook and Jizzy Jay, Angelic Revelations, 2013 Aftermath, 2014 the Truth, The Poet, Harbinger, Tatted Souls, Choices, Infernal Justice, The Greatest Depression, Terrible Twos, Augmented Truth, Fractured, Eternal Love, Alone in the Crowd, The End of Eternity, Diary of a Conspiracy Nut and My Inner Demons are being worked on and are in various stages of development.

Those stories alone will comprise the next 25 holofoil cards.  Brining the foreseeable total to 30.  That will leave an additional 48 to be created and issued.

The goal is to push out 78 total cards to create a possible 100 sets.  With each trump offering there will be five (5) cards pulled from the sets.  #12, #16, #23, #28, and #29 which I will keep for myself and my family.  When they are completed I will then give each member of my family their complete set which they can do whatever they want with them.

I will NEVER run the same design for the master Holofoil set and there will be accounting to make sure I know who has ordered which cards and their original owners.  The people who set their mind to it and collect these cards from the beginning run a good chance of getting a complete set.  With only 95 potential cards in the wild this could make for an interesting adventure for some.

The limited edition holofoil cards will initially be extended to R3 INSIDER MEMBERS who will have access to buy before the general public.  How do you become an R3 INSIDER MEMBER?  It's very easy.  You just need to sign-up for the newsletter by either:

Sorry been a while since I've posted!!!!! - UPDATE

Sorry been a while since I've posted!!!!! - UPDATE

So yeah, lots going on in my personal life and I figured fuck it, I'll share.

The house is done and we've moved in.

Daughter started college.

Unpacked everything and assembled so much furniture it's not even funny.  I think I deserve some kind of certificate from IKEA.  Seriously.

Finished half the basement so kids all have their own rooms and there's even a bathroom dedicated for them, so now the house has THREE bathrooms, which might sound like a lot but there have been times when we only had two where I was like COME ON I GOTTA POOP!!!!!

And since, the kids are all downstairs now, I actually have my own office back now!!!  It's been 11 months in the making and now I can share with you my personal space where I plan on creating much wow!

This is my motivational wall... Yes, Thanos gives me motivation!

I covered and converted the closet of this room into my personal little library / weapons stash...  I have a huge Angry Jackalope tapestry covering it up.

This is how the main area on the right looks with all my books and stuff with the lights on.  The real magic of the room happens when the lights are off (NO NOT THAT KIND OF MAGIC!!!!)

My Two work stations and walls backlit by mounted LEDS on the monitors...

This is the view I look at roughly 12-13 hours a day...

I'll share more in a later post!

Got my Novel back from Editor... Final Edit in Process!

Got my Novel back from Editor... Final Edit in Process!

So good news!  I got my Edits back from publisher and will begin my final review and then send back.  That'll be it.  So I'm going over everything with a fine toothed comb!!!  This is exciting though.

Just sharing.  Also, the new final website is up and live for all of you who may not have known I have a novel coming out.

http://www.magicreallysucks.com

Saturday, August 4, 2018

I got a publisher!

It's Official, Magic Really Sucks - Volume 1 "Revelation" is getting published.  Not by me?  Nope, no more self-publishing (at least for MRS Series).  I received and accepted the contract from Black Rose Writing, LLC.

We are looking at potential release date of Feb 14th 2019...

As always, information regarding Magic Really Sucks can be found at:
http://www.magicreallysucks.com - Website
http://www.facebook.com/magicreallyseries/ - Facebook

also,

Author Platform:

Now we just need to double check the manuscript, make whatever changes I need to... Finalize a cover design (In the event they want to change what I have) and then let them do what they do, and then I jump in and do what I do as well...

:)

Historic moment for me.

This is one of the reasons I fear for America...

So many of you know I am at the tail end of a move and as such I was rewarding myself with a new machine to which I was going to write many many more epic novel.  I scanned the spectrum of the custom build machines from Cyber Power PC to Digital Storm.  And then came across Ironside.  Specifically their Mako limited edition build and was like, "Yes!  This is machine I was looking for!"

I could have bought it right then and there and put it on a card but we just dropped a MINT on this new house and have had nightmare situations the whole length of the build and decided to go through the financing option that Ironside uses [GetFinancing (https://www.getfinancing.com/)] and figured, sure why not.

So I built up my spec and like an excited kid went and placed the order which approved me for $5k which was much more than the rig went for $2,800.  So I figured we were off to the races.  I just had to make the first payment and we were done right?  Nope... I was wrong.

A couple of days passed and I grabbed a few peripherals, a new monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers in anticipation of the new computer coming...

My son comes to my office and I show him the pictures of the Ironside machine and he's like "Cool.  When will it show up?"

I shrugged and brought up the Ironside website to check the build status and it showed "Pending Payment".  I was confused.  I had made my first payment and couldn't understand it.

I called into GetFinancing and they said it was probably that the actual lender (KRW Associates) who needed to fund the loan and maybe they needed license or utility bill, etc...  She gave me their phone number and I called in.  Sure enough they needed some additional information and said they had sent me an email asking for it.  I was a little confused since I didn't see the email in my system and in SPAM.

I explained I was in a new home and didn't have any utility bills yet but had a Comcast PDF with my address on it and showed I had setup internet in my new home.  The girl put me on brief hold and came back and said it was fine.  I sent in the ID pic as well as the PDF and figured we were off to the races...

Nope.  The day I received and email from Robin and she pointed out the PDF I sent didn't have my name on it.  I reviewed it and she was right it had the business name but not mine! DOI!!!!  So I went to the account page and found my account with my name and screen shot the image and sent it.

I didn't hear anything so I called into the company and figured we could talk and I could do a video showing the house, the address basically anything they needed to show I was a legit customer who wasn't trying to scam or bamboozle anyone.  I got her voicemail and I left a message.

I sent in an email this morning as I got up hoping it was all resolved.

I get this response back.

Robert,
We rejected your funding yesterday.  We cannot verify that you live at your address.
 Thank you,Robin

And that was that.  With no follow up, no effort to work with me... nothing they just decided to close it all down.

We've done a few back and forth emails since then and I was relieved to hear that the credit inquiry was a soft one, so it shouldn't impact my credit score.  Also, they will refund my initial payment.  But while that's all good and dandy, I still don't have my Ironside Mako PC which I was so excited about initially.  I am disappointed and frustrated.  I guess I'll go to Microsoft and grab a different machine other than another Surface Studio since they don't seem to have any problems taking my money.

The main issue I have here is the sheer lackadaisical nature of the exchange.  I was the one constantly reaching out to them. Trying to work with them.  Since they were going to be the one making the money on the deal, shouldn't it have been the other way around?  And there my friends is where my fear for America comes in.  This isn't just one company... This is a cancer that exists in all verticals not just IT financing... Customer service?  For the most part it's dead.  That makes me sad.

But there's some light at the end of the tunnel... This could have been a saving grace since I was doing research for this I found out there's a LOT of angry people who don't like KRW.  So much so, there's a website pissedconsumer.com with some people VERY upset with them.

https://krw-associates.pissedconsumer.com/review.html

So maybe God was saving me from a REALLY BAD SITUATION... So if you're planning on buying a rig and you get KRW, just know they left a bad taste in my mouth and are NOT Angry Jackalope Approved.
